I don’t know why, but I stopped for coffee at a small shop two mornings in a row last week.  Usually if I want coffee I just brew my own, but I was feeling pretty lazy so  I decided to buy a cup.   Anyway, the second morning, the barrista recognized me from the day before and said with a grin, “Coffee drinker, eh?”

Huh.  Now, while  I do drink coffee semi-regularly, I’m not sure I’d go so far as to say that I’m a “coffee drinker.”  It seems a bit committal, a bit all-or-nothing, to me.  Certainly whatever amount of coffee-drinking I do doesn’t define me in any real way.  Even when I’m drinking it, it’s never the case that I’d have turned down a cup of tea or a soda at that moment.  So, I’m not even sure one could say I have a preference for coffee over other beverages.  And what taste I do have for it I developed over many years since my teens; I couldn’t stand anything but the smell of coffee until I was about 15.

I stood there idly considering all this while the barrista poured my coffee.  When I went to the side counter to add cream to my cup, the customer who’d been standing behind me in line sidled up beside me.  “You’re no coffee-drinker,” she said, first eying my small cup, then my face.  “You don’t have coffee-drinker’s teeth!”  She tossed her face back over her shoulder with a laugh as she claimed her large cup at the register.
