Deception Afoot

February 3, 2010

What is left out of a discussion is often more important than what is explicitly stated.  I’ve noticed that, although black lesbians, disabled lesbians, poor lesbians, and/or fat lesbians generally describe themselves as such, rich white able-bodied thin lesbians simply proclaim themselves to be lesbians.  What this obscures, of course, is that rich white able-bodied thin lesbians are rich white able-bodied thin women, with all the privileges and biases this entails.  So, when a rich white able-bodied thin lesbian declares a love for “lesbians,” what she’s really doing is declaring a love for other rich white able-bodied thin lesbians, without making explicit that which would expose her as the classist, racist, able-ist, shape-ist bigot rich white able-bodied thin straight women are much more readily recognized as.

I alluded in a comment somewhere to lesbians who leverage their lesbianism in order to perpetuate bigotry that would ordinarily go challenged if promoted by a straight white woman, and this is one of the insidious ways in which they accomplish it.  They simply do not make reference to the fact of their own, and their cohorts’, wealth, whiteness, and so on, in order to give the impression that they speak solely from a place of oppression, even as they demonstrate the values and behaviors of the white and wealthy.

By gawd you have put your fucking finger right on the damn thing, now haven’t you! I have been trying to alleviate this frustration for some time and just could not find the spot. It is like finally locating a splinter and fishing it out. The area is all red, swollen, and painful but the splinter just cannot be touched until you find that perfect avenue of approach.

Just today, I read a comment where a lesbian (and who with all honesty ever wants to beat up on a lesbian or even compete in oppression-olympics-dynamics with lesbians because it is obvious who gets the most shit in this world, but come on) stated that tyrannies should leave lesbians alone and go bother straight women. How fucking misogynist can a desire be. How about, tyrannies leave women alone, full stop. It is not just misogynist, it is a desire to continue a division among women. I would not wish a tyrannie on any woman (although, I agree if a female did pair up with a tyrannie, more than likely she would be a heterosexual woman, but that is beside the point).

I think that particular example is probably not exactly what I’m talking about, since it’s generally straight women who are giving trannies the license to consider themselves women, which is, in effect, sending the trannies lesbians’ way.

I agree with you that it is a lot of (or mostly) straight women who indulge the delusions of tyrannies, therefore feeding tyrannies into thinking any woman should accept their fake ass. However, when a woman claims she is in interested in solidarity with women, then I am sorry, she has no business sicking men on any women. But yes, the straight women are misogynist as hell when they give tyrannies license to expect FAB to see them as women. Tyrannies are men with dicks and belong in the pile of potential rapists like other men and need to stay the hell away from all women.

Lesbians don’t have any obligation to make sure that they’re including straight women in their efforts any more than black straight women have an obligation to make sure they’re including white straight women. So, I really don’t have a problem with that particular statement. What I do have a problem with is rich white lesbians declining to make explicit that they speak for and as rich white lesbians, and instead obscuring this fact by just saying that they’re lesbians. It’s the same problem I have with all white women – saying “women” or “lesbians” when what they’re really talking about are white women and white lesbians.
