I’ve written before about the way that straight white women only ever make mention of poor, nonwhite women in order to justify, at least in their own minds, their refusal to broaden the scope of their feminism.  They might bring up child brides in Afghanistan in order to “prove” that separatism is impossible, not only for the child bride herself, but for married white women with college degrees in the west.  Or, like my favorite racist Aussie, rainsinger, they might bring up “Philippino” women in order to “prove” that no one should listen to black women and to bolster their belief that American black women oppress, not only the “Philippino” women, but ostensibly boy-mommying white Australians like herself:

Go tell the Philippino women about how American black women cannot “oppress” them through huge American military bases. American black, brown and white soldiers fill the planet – many of them take their black, brown and white women wives, girlfriends, sisters, daughters along, with the same ‘privileges’ as American white women and men relative to the local populations. American black women oppress plenty of other women through their nationality.

It’s obvious she never gave a thought about Filipinas until she saw an opportunity to, yet again, attempt to silence and discredit black women.  If she had, perhaps she’d have known how to spell their nationality; at the very least, she’d have cared enough to google it.

Now, my girlfriend being one of the Filipino (not half, not Filipino-American, not Filipino expatriate, but Filipino) women she so flippantly chose to use in her quest to silence women like me, I am both personally and intellectually offended.  What Filipinos know that this white Australian consistently wants to forget is that black Americans, black women in particular, don’t as a class run the American country.  So, they have a modicum of perspective when it comes to black Americans, who most certainly do have the privilege of American nationality but who they can see are not privileged with regard to race.  Regardless of whatever “beautiful black American” women they might see on TV, Filipinas aren’t rushing out to darken their skin in order to look like us; quite the opposite, in fact.  They are poisoning themselves trying to achieve a pinkish-white complexion probably not at all unlike rainsinger’s.  They know what sort of skin tone will bring them the most privilege in the global village.  And I’ve heard enough from Filipinas themselves about how Venus Williams is too black to even be allowed to show herself in public to know that they’re happy not to be black, regardless of Venus’ American nationality.

One also has to wonder whether it has entirely escaped rainsinger’s notice that Filipino women are slaving away as underpaid servants in the homes of white Australians right now in numbers that far outshine the current population of black women in the Philippines, of any nationality.  It seems to me that if she actually gave a damn about the supposed damage black American women (not just American women, see, only the black ones) are doing to Filipinas, she’d also perhaps mention the harms white Australian women are inflicting as their employers in a foreign land, as well as the harm white Australian males (along with *their* wives, girlfriends, and daughters) are doing to girls and women in the Philippines, who occupy the country in much larger numbers than black women, of any nationality.

But I suppose if she’d thought about (or just bothered to google) any of that, she’d have had to pick a different nation of women she doesn’t actually give a damn about in order to make her inane point.  I’m pretty sure none of the women she could have nonchalantly exploited for her own ends would be any more interested in accepting her as an ally than any of the Filipino women who’ve read that bullshit are, though.

And, just in case Undercover Punk’s reading, this right here is yet another example of your racism.  If racist white women don’t even have to bother to google the proper spelling of nonwhite women’s nationality before they speak on their behalf on your blog – if that shit goes without challenge – you’re as racist as she is.  Nationality is not the same thing as race, since you’re so into definitions.  Consider it “BROUGHT!!!”

LOL! Yes! Go Margie, go Margie…!

Not to mention how rainsinger starts out responding to a comment that uses the term WOC, however, she then specifically targets black women in her rebuttal. How and why did she make that jump? I will tell you why, because UCP and rainsinger are talking about a specific woman, while putting on a show for Bev Jo and others. They are acting like they are talking in general. That’s what happens with stupid people. They think everyone else is stupid too.

That’s what happens with stupid people. They think everyone else is stupid too.

Don’t I know it. Unfortunately, there are plenty of stupid people out there to make that assumption worth their while.

And, well, of course rainsinger would make the leap from “WOC” to black. It wasn’t too long ago she was whining about how black American women have forced “WOC” on the rest of the world’s nonwhite women whose nationalities she doesn’t care to know how to spell in an unsurpassed act of oppression.

It’s my fault, I couldn’t resist reading that thread. Margie wouldn’t have had anything to do with that blog otherwise. But I had to call her attention to this particular comment. I only ever read there for amusement and to confirm my suspicion that white women really don’t know anything.

Oh, I’m sure it’s far beyond just a suspicion now, love. But, hey, they’ll let you be their ally so long as you agree to hate black women and never challenge their presumptions about you or your culture. Surely that makes up for the fact that they don’t know anything?

“[B]lack women in particular, don’t as a class run the American country.”–MJ

NO KIDDING! Hey, I’m an aging hillbilly who hasn’t even moved 50 miles from where I was born, my parents voted for George Wallace (a huge racist)for president every time he ran, the old men in my neighborhood told us children that the world would end (the Christain Armeggedon)in a race war (black on white), and despite all of that I have always known that American black men wield no political power and that black women wield even less. Why? Because I, despite all of my limitations, have eyes to see things for myself and enough brains to comprehend the reality around me! And I don’t understand why educated professional women apparently can’t grasp that American black women are not in the position to oppress any group? This is not an argument that can be honestly made.

How much do you want to bet either they will ignore that the spelling has been pointed out as wrong or they will go find white people’s evidence that it can be spelled either way. Everything is always defined by white people. If you don’t use white people’s definitions you are not bringing it.

Aw, damn. I forgot about that loophole.

I don’t suppose WordPress is white enough, is it? Because even WordPress knows that “Philippino” is wrong wrong wrong.

“I only ever read there for amusement and to confirm my suspicion that white women really don’t know anything.”–P.

Do you really think it’s just a matter of ignorance? I would argue willful ignorance, which I think is worse.

Oh, and can any of these racist white women please think of another black woman to pin the woes of the world on? Oprah and Condi are worn ragged from all the abuse they get on white people’s tongues. Sheesh. If they can’t even think of any other prominent black women, that alone should be a big enough clue that black women, despite the existence of two (COUNT ‘EM, TWO) whole tokens, aren’t exerting a lot of influence.

Though it’s not actually like this, because of blackness and whiteness in this situation, there is something about the machinations on the other end of this – all this energy and all these words, fixated on you as this bugaboo who’s out to harm white women, or at any rate someone who it is Vitally Important That They Prove Wrong – that makes me think of the type of scuffle where a much larger party has their hand on the forehead of a much smaller party who is impotently taking swings that never have a chance of landing. They are just so far from being a match for you that it would be uncomfortably funny and embarrassing to watch if it weren’t rooted in something this serious.

It is simple Joan. All black women must be discredited. It is absolutely essential to white supremacy. Everyone must band together to protect the image because all it takes is one to expose the fragility of perceived superiority.

Talk about black women calling racism as the same as males calling transphobia, white supremacy is the sibling to trannyism. Both, white supremacy and trannyism are in oppressor positions and must maintain delusions in order to claim oppressed status.

I believe it’s not merely about ignorance. White women knowingly commit the same injustice that males inflict on females. They vilify a black lesbian for stating the glaringly obvious. They then applaud other white women for saying the same thing. They flaunt their hatred of lesbians. They demand proof, for that is what they do. DEMAND. Without seeing it as an exercise of their privilege.

  11. October 20, 2010 7:47 pm

They demand proof, and at the same time they assert that the only acceptable proof is the proof that they deem acceptable. Which is a neat trick. And a tried-and-tested tactic of oppressors everywhere, ensuring that injustice is upheld and perpetuated.

I love how she forgets the fact that Australia had a specifically WHITES ONLY immigration policy until the latter half of the twentieth century, and how if a non-white did apply, they had to sit a dictation test, in any one of fifty different European languages. Cos you know, I’m sure there were NO womyn in favour of that kind of shit, cos womyn don’t oppress other womyn.

She also forgets, convienently enough, that Aboriginal Australian womyn were not “given” the vote until the late 60’s and early 70’s and until that point, where considered a part of the Australian flora + fauna. And all the nice little Aussie white ladies would have been all “Ooh sorry, we don’t like to oppress other womyn”. Puh-lease. Look, there’s some more example of white womyn oppressing other non-white womyn for her high and mighty list of checkings.

Holy fucking shit, white Australian’s ignorance of our own sordid and fucked up history of white-supremacy really gets to me. So many Aussies like to pretend racism doesn’t happen here because we’re apparently a white country which is also apparently classless!

That’s what happens with stupid people. They think everyone else is stupid too.

    True that..

I bet if she read this she’ll think you’re just not giving her a “fair go” cos she’s a poor little white “Aussie Battler.” fighting the good fight for womyn.

P.S Also mind if I link to this entry?
